How to Get from Hanoi to Sapa (Train, Bus & Limousine 2026)
The most common way to reach Sapa from Hanoi is an overnight train or sleeper bus to Lao Cai, followed by a roughly one-hour transfer up to Sapa town — a journey of about 320 km that most visitors complete overnight to save a travel day. This guide covers train, bus, and limousine options and how to time your arrival with a trek.

The usual route
Hanoi → Lao Cai (train or road, usually overnight) → Sapa town (about a one-hour mountain transfer). We focus on treks once you're in Sapa, so arrange Hanoi-side transport separately, then email us your trek dates once you know your arrival time.
Overnight train (popular)
SP-series overnight trains run from Hanoi to Lao Cai, departing evening and arriving early morning; timetables and bookings are published by Vietnam Railways. Soft sleeper berths are the comfortable choice for the roughly 8-hour journey. From Lao Cai station, shared vans climb to Sapa town in about an hour.
Sleeper bus and limousine van
Direct sleeper buses and limousine vans run Hanoi → Sapa town overnight, roughly 6–7 hours door to door — convenient if your hotel is near the Stone Church meeting point where several of our walks and treks begin.
Matching transport to your trek
Morning arrival in Sapa leaves enough time to join an afternoon intro walk or even a half-day trek if you're not too tired. Email us your estimated arrival time when you book so we can suggest a realistic schedule — or connect with us directly on WhatsApp or email.
Getting back to Hanoi
The same train, bus, and limousine options run in reverse from Lao Cai or Sapa town back to Hanoi. Book your onward journey once your trek dates are confirmed — an overnight option lets you use travel time instead of losing a full day.

Frequently asked questions
- Do you arrange Hanoi transport?
- We focus on treks in Sapa itself. We can advise on timing so it fits your trek, but we don't sell train or bus tickets.
- Should I stay in Lao Cai or Sapa town?
- Stay in Sapa town for trekking — all of our tours start there, roughly an hour above Lao Cai.
- How many nights before a homestay trek?
- Arrive at least the day before. A same-morning arrival followed straight by an overnight homestay trek is too rushed for most guests.
- Is the overnight train comfortable enough to trek the next day?
- Most guests manage a half-day trek after an overnight soft-sleeper train. A full-day or homestay trek is easier with one rest night first.
